Wembley Stadium in London, United Kingdom, is a state-of-the-art football stadium located in Wembley, London. With a seating capacity of 90,000, it ranks second in Europe in terms of size, behind only Camp Nou. The stadium’s roof canopy covers the largest area of any venue worldwide, and its opposite stand offers a stunning view of Wembley Arena. Following the reopening of Wembley Stadium, the facility is commonly referred to as “New Wembley Stadium” to distinguish it from the original structure.
The original Wembley Stadium was completed in 1923 and earned the nickname “The Empire Stadium.” It was one of the world’s most renowned football venues and, owing to its location in London—the capital of England—served as the home ground for the England national football team. The stadium hosted the UEFA Champions League final on five occasions and was among the seventeen venues that staged the FIFA World Cup final. In 2003, construction commenced on the new stadium, and the old structure was subsequently demolished. Originally scheduled for completion in 2006, the project was delayed until early 2007, with the new stadium officially opening on March 9, 2007. Ownership of the facility was transferred to the English Football Association.
