Metsӓ Tissue has announced plans to build a new advanced toilet paper factory in Goole, East Riding of Yorkshire, UK, with a planned capacity of 240,000 tons per annum. The construction will be carried out in several phases over the next decade.

The new facility, which is expected to cost hundreds of millions of pounds, will use primary wood pulp from sustainably managed forests in Northern Europe as its main raw material. Upon completion, it will become the largest consumer tissue mill in the UK. Currently, up to 45% of toilet paper products in the UK and Ireland are imported. The new factory will significantly reduce the import volume of toilet paper in the UK and Ireland, increasing the self-sufficiency rate of toilet paper products in the UK by more than 30%, and reducing dependence on imports will also help reduce the carbon footprint of the product.

Esa Kaikkonen, CEO of Metsӓ Tissue, said: "The Goole area is an important transportation hub in the UK and is committed to developing cutting-edge green technology, which aligns with our ambition for clean, sustainable manufacturing."

The new factory will adopt sustainable production technology, aiming to build an efficient, modern, and environmentally friendly plant. Metsӓ Tissue places great emphasis on sustainability, aiming to use only raw materials that do not rely on fossil fuels for all its products by 2030, striving for net-zero society. In addition, the company is also committed to using no fossil fuels for the operation of all its factories (including the newly built Goole factory) by 2030.
